The Mount
Lennox, MA |
The Mount is Edith Wharton's elegantly restored country estate, originally built by her in 1902 according to the design precepts she advocated in her books The Decoration of Houses and Italian Villas and Their Gardens. Here Wharton fashioned a writer’s retreat; a haven of beauty and calm where she could write in peace and entertain distinguished friends. She created some of her greatest works at The Mount, including her first bestseller, The House of Mirth, and her 1907 novel, The Fruit of the Tree. Visitors can tour Wharton’s exquisite classical revival mansion and wander through three acres of formal gardens that recreate her original landscape design. From the smallest architectural detail to the overall garden plan, The Mount embodies its creator's spirit.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971, The Mount is the only U.S. monument to Edith Wharton and is one of the few National Historic Landmarks dedicated to women.

Washington Park Conservancy
Albany, NY |
Washington Park, first conceived by Albany civic leaders in 1868, was planned by Frederick Law Olmstead, designer of New York City’s Central Park, and completed in 1872 from the detailed designs of landscape architects John Bogart and John Yapp Culyer, both Olmstead protégés and Albany natives. Over the years, the Park suffered the effects of urbanization and suburban flight, but the 1970’s renaissance that swept the adjoining neighborhood provided the impetus to restore the Park to its earlier brilliance, and in 1972, it was designated as the center of a historic district with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1985, out of an increasing interest in the Park’s welfare, a small group of public-spirited citizens, encouraged by an enthusiastic city administration, began what has become known as the Washington Park Conservancy. The Conservancy has initiated many restoration projects for the 200-year old Park, and continues its mission to preserve, protect and improve Washington Park.
