FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is responsible for all aircraft operations on the ground and in the airspace of the Albany International Airport

The FAA operates the Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and the Flight Standards office.

The new tower, which began handling operations in February of 1999, stands 90 feet tall. Its 13,000 square foot base-building houses the radar room or TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) where air traffic controllers monitor the in-flight activity of all aircraft entering Albany airspace.

Other air traffic controllers work within the glass-enclosure at the top of the tower. From the "cab," they monitor all aircraft activity on the ground and keep a visual watch on all aircraft approaching or departing the airport's two runways.

During 1998, the Air Traffic Control Tower at Albany International Airport handled 141,778 operations. The TRACON handled 196,311 operations.

It is the third such facility to be built since the airport opened in 1928.

The previous tower was built in 1957 and was demolished in May of 1999 to provide additional space for aircraft and two additional jet bridges along the Airport's C-Concourse.
