In 1995 the Albany County Airport Authority began the design process for a completely new airport including new terminal, parking garage, Air Traffic Control Tower and cargo facility. The project would replace the existing structure that dated back to 1959.

The new 230,000 square foot Albany International Airport Terminal opened on June 1, 1998, four months ahead of schedule. The Grand Opening brought between 75,000 and 100,000 visitors to the airport for the three-day gala celebration that included a black-tie formal held throughout the Terminal.

Arriving and departing passengers can exit their vehicles curb-side at the terminal under the protection of a glass canopy. Those choosing to park their vehicles can select from a parking garage that connects directly to the second floor of the terminal, or from various ground lots.

The terminal was designed to reflect the Capital Region's rich Dutch and Shaker heritage. Varying shades of brick reminiscent of designs used by early Dutch settlers were used to cover the 500 foot long inside and outside walls of the terminal. Large, round windows and sky lights provide a bright environment.

Our Shaker heritage is most evident in the liberal use of fine grain woods that provide warmth to the two-story tall ticketing area. Sugar maple, the New York State tree was employed with the use of accents in American cherry.

The Shaker wood motif expands to include display areas that showcase the region's culture, economy and environment. Opposite the displays, a glass wall allows floor-to-ceiling views of aircraft.

The new terminal with three concourses is designed to accommodate three-million passengers a year.

Ticket counters are conveniently located next to an escalator and elevator to provide quick access to boarding gates located on the second level. Three security checkpoints offer immediate screening of passengers and guests.

The terminal's Baggage Claim area also exhibits the intricate brick designs with sugar maple and cherry accents. Three, high-speed baggage belts provide passengers with easy and convenient access to incoming luggage.

Rental car offices are located within the baggage claim area.

Airport Parking Shuttles, Taxi, hotel shuttle and limousine services are available within steps of baggage claim.

A curved observation deck located on the terminal's third level offers passengers and visiting an exciting view of the airport's runways, taxi ways and FAA Control Tower. Loudspeakers allow visitors to the observation deck to listen in on conversations between the aircraft flight crews and air traffic controllers.

In 1999, as the terminal approached its first anniversary, the Airport Authority approved the construction of a 16,000 square foot addition. The addition was designed to attract a new low-fare carrier to Albany International Airport.

Architects/Engineers Reynolds, Smith & Hills, Inc. created the terminal design. Turner, Collie & Braden, Inc. and Clough Harbour & Associates were responsible for civil engineering. A joint venture involving Beltrone Construction Co. and Turner Construction Co. managed construction of the project. Apple Designs, Inc. provided consulting services for signage and graphics
