Shaker Heritage Society

The history of this region is deeply tied to the presence of the Shakers, a religious community whose adherents emigrated from England and settled here in the late 18th century. The Albany International Airport was constructed on agricultural fields that were once part of the first Shaker settlement in this country. The Shaker Heritage Society preserves and interprets the buildings and grounds that remain today as the Albany Shaker National Historic Site. This exhibition also features Hancock Shaker Village, in Pittsfield, MA, and The Shaker Museum, Mount Lebanon, NY, both of which were also early and prominent Shaker communities in the US.
