Albany, New York (September 6, 2006) - - - The Albany International Airport will host a series of "Fear of Flying" classes designed to assist travelers who may suffer from a disproportionate fear of flying. The program will begin on September 20th, and is open to the public.
“One out of eight individuals harbors a fear of flying,” said David Langdon, chairman of the Albany County Airport Authority. “This program will assist our passengers to overcome that fear and help them experience the benefits of air travel.”
Shirley McMorris, Ph.D., will conduct the course. Dr. McMorris has extensive experience dealing with anxiety and panic disorders and has over 20 years of clinical experience helping individuals overcome their fears and phobias. Dr. McMorris is a licensed psychologist in practice with Karner Psychological Associates of 2280 Western Avenue, Guilderland, NY. Dr. McMorris trained at the Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders at the University at Albany.
“This program is designed to help air travelers and potential air travelers overcome their fears,” said Shirley McMorris. “I teach a variety of cognitive behavioral techniques to give individuals the tools they need to fly successfully.”
The program is structured into three classes that will include an address by a commercial airline pilot. Classes will meet in the Airport's Business Center located on Concourse-C. The program dates are Wednesday, September 20th from 6-9 p.m., and Wednesday, September 27th from 6-9 p.m. The final session, on Saturday, September 30th will feature a round trip "Graduation Flight" to Baltimore on board a Southwest Airlines 737.
