FEAR OF FLYING COURSE OFFERED AT AIRPORT

Albany, New York (September 12, 2005) - - - The Albany International Airport will host a series of "Fear of Flying" classes designed to assist first-time flyers and passengers who may suffer from a disproportionate fear of flying. The program will begin on October 26th, and is open to the public.

"While air travel is proven to be the safest means of transportation, still, one out of eight individuals harbor a fear of flying,” said Rev. Michael A. Farano, chairman of the Albany County Airport Authority. "Overcoming that fear can open a world of new destinations, business opportunities, vacations and memorable family gatherings.”

Dr. Richard Platt, Ph.D., who initiated a Fear of Flying program in the Capital District in 1988, will conduct the course. Dr. Platt is a recognized expert on anxiety and panic disorders and has over 25 years of clinical experience helping individuals overcome their fears and phobias. Dr. Platt is a professional member of the Anxiety Disorders Association of American and the American Psychological Association.

The fear of flying prevents people from traveling to such a degree that it affects family life, and business opportunities,” said Dr. Richard Platt. People with this fear greatly exaggerate the risk of flying or feel trapped by their inability to escape the confines of the airplane. Their panicked thoughts lead to panicked feelings, making the experience one to avoid. People can learn to change their perspective, thoughts and feeling about flying and open doors to new experiences.”

The program is structured into three classes that will include an address by a commercial airline pilot. Classes will meet in the Airport's Community Room located on Concourse-B. The program dates are Wednesday, October 26th from 6-9 p.m., and Wednesday, November 2nd from 6-9 p.m. The final session, on Saturday, November 5th will feature a round-trip "Graduation Flight" to Baltimore on a Southwest Airlines 737.

The fee for the program will be $335. Those interested in registering for the course should contact Dr. Richard Platt at 518 768-2809 or the Albany County Airport Authority at 518 242-2222.
