Albany, NY (September 20, 2000) - - - Capitol Chamber Artists will begin a
series of classical concerts at the Albany International Airport. The
concerts, featuring the works of composer Franz Joseph Haydn, begin
Thursday, September 21, at 4:30 p.m. The Chamber concerts are a
continuation of the Albany County Airport Authority's commitment to profile
area programs and talent.
"We are delighted to offer our travelers and visitors the opportunity to
experience Haydn's London Symphonies as they have never been heard before,"
said Rev. Michael A. Farano, Chairman of the Albany County Airport
Authority.
In the 1790's, composer Franz Joseph Haydn wrote 12 London Symphonies for
full orchestra. The man responsible for commissioning these works,
violinist Johann Peter Salomon, transcribed the 12 symphonies for
performances by small ensembles. These transcriptions were very popular in
Europe until the mid 1880's, however, with Haydn's music out of print for
over 100 years, they had never been recorded in their entirety.
Capitol Chamber Artists, with the assistance of a grant from the Howard and
Bush Foundation and a Challenge Grant from the New York State Council on the
Arts, recently completed recording the symphonies at the Troy Savings Bank
Music Hall.
Capitol Chamber Artists will be performing selections from its recordings at
the Airport on September 21 and 28, October 26, November 16, and December 7.
All performances will take place at 4:30 p.m. on the second floor of the
Airport Terminal.
Capitol Chamber Artists Airport concerts are made possible through the
generous support of Border's Books and Music; Capital District Physicians'
Health Plan; City of Albany; New York State Council on the Arts; Southwest
Airlines; Troy Savings Bank; Honorable Neil Breslin and the Albany County
Airport Authority.
