Albany, NY (November 21, 2003) - - - Passengers traveling on flights from Albany International Airport during the holiday travel season should arrive at the Airport no less than 90 minutes before their planned departure. During peak travel periods, 5 am - 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., passengers should consider arriving up to two hours early to meet their scheduled flights.
"Our airlines will be operating at or near capacity during peak travel days" said Rev. Michael A. Farano, Chairman of the Albany County Airport Authority. "By arriving well in advance of their scheduled departure time, passengers will be able to check in, obtain their boarding pass and pass through the security checkpoint in plenty of time for their flights."
The Transportation Security Administration has offered three simple tips for travelers. The TSA’s new IN, OUT, and OFF program is designed to reduce delays at the Security Checkpoint and decrease a traveler’s chances of undergoing a more thorough secondary screening that takes an average of three minutes per person.
TSA recommends the following when approaching the checkpoint:
- IN -- Place all metal items IN a carry-on bag while waiting in line.
- OUT -- Take laptops OUT of their cases.
- OFF -- Take coats OFF.
There are a number of additional measures travelers can take to make their flights more enjoyable during the busy holiday season. When planning a flight, passengers should follow these simple guidelines:
- Bring a photo ID with you for check in
- Leave checked luggage unlocked for inspection
- Remember, only two carry-on items are allow through the checkpoint
- Place identification on outside and inside of luggage
- Be sure to obtain a Boarding Pass before you reach the Security Checkpoint
- Allow time between flights to make connections
Passengers traveling with holiday gifts are reminded that any and all packages are subject to search. Security personnel may find it necessary to open a package for inspection and that could result in damage to the decorative wrappings. Travelers are advised to wrap their presents once they reach their final destination.
Parking at the Airport has been increased to handle the expected heavy loads. The Airport’s popular Economy "E" lot now has room for over 1,750 cars. A convenient shuttle bus transports passengers to and from the terminal.
Once again Airport travelers will be able to enjoy a variety of musical groups that are scheduled to perform at the Airport between now and New Year’s Day. The performers will include students from area schools, professional musicians, senior groups and "Saxophone Santa".
