ALBANY, NY (January 22, 2025) — Albany International Airport (ALB) today unveiled a new Nursing Mothers’ Room in the center of its main terminal, reinforcing the airport’s ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming, accessible, and comfortable experience for all travelers.
Designed to support nursing mothers and families traveling with young children, the new space features two private, spacious, and comfortable nursing areas in a calm, relaxing setting. The room also includes a small family-friendly area with a table, bookshelf, and toys to help keep toddlers occupied while parents care for infants.
“Air travel should work for everyone, including nursing mothers and families traveling with young children,” said Samuel A. Fresina, Chair of the Albany County Airport Authority. “By partnering with St. Peter’s Health Partners from the start, we created a Nursing Mothers’ Room that is comfortable, functional, and designed around the real needs of families at Albany International Airport.”
Conveniently located in the heart of the terminal just past the TSA checkpoint, the Nursing Mothers’ Room is a short walk from all three concourses, making it easily accessible for travelers throughout the facility. The new room represents an upgrade from the Mamava Pod currently located in Concourse A.
St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP) played a critical role in the development of the new space, working closely with airport staff from the earliest planning stages. Drawing on its clinical expertise, SPHP consulted on the layout, functionality, and overall design of the Nursing Mothers’ Room to ensure it meets the real-world needs of nursing mothers and their families.
“Today represents an important step toward making travel more inclusive and comfortable for families,” said Christine Hernandez, a project coordinator and lactation consultant for SPHP. “A dedicated lactation space isn’t only a convenience—it’s a recognition of the needs of breastfeeding parents and an investment in the health and well being of infants.”
The room also features black-and-white photographs of mothers and their children by Hudson Valley photographer Lucy Bohnsack, presented through the Albany International Airport’s Art & Culture Program, which has showcased regional artists since 1998.
The new Nursing Mothers’ Room is part of a broader series of recent passenger-experience improvements at Albany International Airport focused on accessibility and inclusion. These efforts include the opening of a Sensory Room designed to support neurodivergent travelers, a new Children’s Play Area, and the installation of new flooring that is easier to navigate for travelers using wheelchairs, mobility devices, or strollers.
Additional enhancements include upgraded signage and lighting to improve visibility for travelers who are visually impaired, regular updates to the airport’s public address sound system, and the availability of digital tools such as the AIRA app, which connects travelers who are blind or have low vision with trained visual interpreters, and the Pointr app, which provides step-by-step digital wayfinding throughout the airport.
