Airport Authority

Board, Staff & Hours

The Albany County Airport Authority is governed by a seven member board with four members appointed by the Majority Leader of the Albany County Legislature and three members appointed by the Albany County Executive, all with approval of the Albany County Legislature.

The Authority members are appointed for a term of four years or until a successor is appointed. Any person appointed to fill a vacancy will be appointed to serve only the unexpired term.

Based on the County's responsibility for the appointment of the Authority members, their approval of the Authority's five-year capital improvement programs and the issuance of certain debt, the Authority is considered a component unit of the County under the criteria set forth by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. The Authority does not have any component units.

History

From the Nation’s First Municipal Landing Site to the Smart Airport of Tomorrow

Albany owns the distinction of establishing the first municipal landing site for airplanes in 1910, a small landing strip located at a former polo field three miles north of the city.

The airport moved to Westerlo Island near the city on the Hudson River, where it was named “Quentin Roosevelt Field” in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt’s son, a pilot who was shot down during World War I. The airport moved again to support what would soon be an explosion in passenger air travel, with construction beginning on a new airport at our current site in 1928.

Over nearly 100 years, ALB has grown into a world-class international airport, serving over 1.5 million passengers a year, and partnering with technology leaders on innovations in blockchain, touch-free travel, UV sanitation, and passenger experience.
