Travelers urged to plan ahead as winter weather is expected to impact flights Sunday and Monday.
Albany, NY (January 23, 2026) — With a significant winter storm forecasted to impact the Capital Region beginning Sunday and continuing though Monday, Albany International Airport (ALB) is fully mobilized and preparing for winter operations and urging travelers to plan ahead.
Current forecasts from the National Weather Service call for high winds and upwards of 17 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall expected late Sunday evening into Monday morning. In response, ALB’s snow team has staged equipment, coordinated staffing, and activated established storm-response plans. Crews will be working around the clock throughout the storm, supported by additional plowing and snow-hauling assistance from an outside contractor.
“Winter storms are a reality of operating an airport in Upstate New York, and our teams are well prepared to handle them,” said Samuel A. Fresina, Chair of the Albany County Airport Authority. “While weather of this magnitude can lead to delays and cancellations, our focus is on maintaining safe operations and working closely with our airline partners to minimize disruption whenever possible.”
Snow removal efforts will focus on the entire airfield and public-use areas, including runways, taxiways, aprons, gate areas, parking lots, roadways, and sidewalks. The airport maintains a robust fleet of snow-fighting equipment, including high-capacity snowblowers, wide-blade plows, airfield brooms, and parking-lot trucks. Deicing operations are also fully prepared, with propylene glycol tanks filled to capacity to ensure departing aircraft can be supported throughout the storm.
Traveler Advisory
ALB’s airline partners expect a significant number of delays and cancellations, particularly for flights originating from other regions of the country impacted by winter weather. This weekend’s storm is expected to affect large portions of the Midwest and East Coast, increasing the likelihood of widespread disruptions to flight schedules.
