Albany, NY — United Way of the Greater Capital Region has partnered with the Regional Food Bank to provide emergency support for federal employees who continue to work without pay during the ongoing federal government shutdown, which started October 1, 2025.
An estimated 5,223 federal workers in the Albany-Troy-Schenectady metropolitan area have been furloughed as a result of the ongoing shutdown. Approximately 250 essential employees with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), continue to report to work at the Albany International Airport without receiving paychecks.
In direct response to the shutdown United Way launched the Government Shutdown Relief Fund, designed to provide immediate assistance to these essential employees. Through donations to the United Way, gift cards will be distributed to all impacted employees to help cover the cost of basic necessities.
In addition, the Regional Food Bank will provide a food distribution at the airport, with an estimated 8,500 pounds of food distributed throughout the day to impacted workers and their families.
Workers in need of additional financial assistance with rent, utilities, or other essential monthly expenses are encouraged to call the 211 Helpline, powered by United Way. Through 211, individuals can be connected to critical services and resources available throughout our region during this time.
“The government shutdown created an immediate hardship for hundreds of local families and we knew we had to act fast. Within days, we launched an emergency fund and rallied donors and partners in order to get real help to families. That’s the power of United Way's local network and bringing our community together. We will continue to be here to help support workers and their families, as long as they need it,” said Peter Gannon, President and CEO, United Way of the Greater Capital Region.
"The majority of New Yorkers who access the charitable food network do so on a temporary basis. This current federal shutdown is an example, six weeks ago, the federal employees impacted here at the Albany International Airport never thought they would need the assistance of the Regional Food Bank, yet due to circumstances beyond their control, today they need a hand. Soon, these employees will not need our assistance. The Regional Food Bank is here to support our neighbors, in their time of need," said Tom Nardacci, CEO, Regional Food Bank
“For nearly a month, our federal employees have continued to report for duty with professionalism and pride, ensuring that operations at Albany International Airport run smoothly. We’re deeply grateful for their dedication and commitment during this challenging time. We also want to thank United Way, the Regional Food Bank, and the many local organizations, companies, and individuals who have stepped up to support these essential workers who keep our airport and community moving,” said Peter Stuto, CEO, Albany International Airport
